John Makhoul

John Makhoul is a Lebanese American computer scientist with a specialization in the field of speech and language processing. 

He was born on September, 19, 1942, in Deir Mimas, Lebanon, and is recognized for his contributions to linear predictive coding, as well as the application of speech recognition techniques for more efficient OCR (optical character recognition). He is now a Chief Scientist at BBN Technologies. 

Before his rise to fame, John received his Bachelor of Engineering Degree for Electrical Engineering from the American University of Beirut. He later received his Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from Ohio State University, and his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. 

Throughout his career, John received the IEEE Senior Award, the IEEE Technical Achievement Award, and the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, among others. He has also been granted the ISCA Medal.
