Nasib Arida

Nasib Arida was a Syrian American poet and a founding member of the New York Penn League.

He was born on January 1st, 1887 in Homs, Syria. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 18 and began his career working in retail and writing for literary magazines. In 1913 Arida founded his own exclusively Arab literary magazine, Al-Funoon. Two years later, along with Abd al-Masih Haddad, he founded the New York Penn League, which was an Arabic-language literary society.

Nasib was a fiercely outspoken poet who wrote against the oppressive rule of the Ottoman empire over Syria.
